Five days after train disaster in India, more than 80 victims have not yet been named | Abroad

On Friday, 288 people were killed and more than 1,000 injured in the Indian state of Odisha. More than 80 of those fatalities could still not be identified. Pradeep Jen, Chief Secretary of Odisha, said today.

Two passenger trains and a stationary freight train were involved in the accident on Friday evening. The official death toll from the train crash has risen again from 275 to 288, while 83 bodies remain unidentified, Jen said. More than 1,000 injured people were taken to hospital for treatment.

Desperate relatives of passengers are still looking for information about their loved ones, but “if you search the photo database, you will see that many of the bodies are damaged beyond recognition,” the local government said. That’s why it turns out to be quite a challenge to identify some bodies. Thus Muhammed Nizamuddin could not claim the bodies of his grandsons. Tafsir (16) and his brother Tausif (13) were on one of the trains with their father when they were involved in the collision.

The father is still missing, but photos of the teens were projected onto a wall in a hospital so that family members could identify them. The boys’ faces were disfigured, but their grandfather thought he recognized them. He then went to the state capital of Bhubaneshwar, where nearly a hundred unclaimed bodies are kept in several hospitals. However, an official stopped him there, as Tafsir’s body had already been claimed by another family. It just had to be handed over to them.

“How is this possible? You mean I don’t recognize my grandchildren?” Nizamuddin told the BBC. The man must now contact officials in Bhubaneshwar, who are responsible, among other things, for verifying claims and ensuring that the body reaches the right family.

In cases where more than one family has claimed a body, DNA testing is done, the local government says. Unidentified bodies are being held in a hospital morgue for the next 10 days and the government “would not rush to cremate or bury them”.

Three trains collided in Balasore on Friday after a change to the electronic roadway protection system. A passenger train collided with a freight train at 130 kilometers per hour. Three wagons therefore ended up on an adjacent track. An express train between Bangalore and Calcutta failed to avoid a collision.
