“Don’t go on the agenda”
His two-month and successful rescue mission at VfB Stuttgart also left its mark on Sebastian Hoeneß. “I have to figure that out first. Those were brutally intense weeks,” said the coach on Monday evening after the relegation second leg at Hamburger SV. Thanks to the 41-year-old, the club secured a place in the Bundesliga thanks to the unpopular extension of the season with a 3-1 win over the third-placed team. The Swabian first division 16 already had the first game against HSV. won 3-0 on Thursday.

It was “a mixture of relief, joy, a bit of emptiness,” said Hoeneß when asked about his feelings after the work was done. “Also because of the pressure that was there for weeks, months. And now especially in the two games.” The VfB coach also praised his protégés: “You have to imagine what weighs on the players. Biggest respect to the boys.”

For the time being, however, Hoeneß will have little opportunity to recover. CEO Alexander Wehrle and sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth ask for a big season analysis. “We’re happy to be able to play in the Bundesliga again,” said Wehrle. “But of course we will not go back to business as usual.” He already said that in April. “It doesn’t matter how the season ends, we will do a very tough, very critical analysis. And then we will also change a few things.” According to Wohlgemuth, those responsible will meet with the coaching team on Wednesday. The 44-year-old announced a longer meeting.
VfB Stuttgart will make some personnel decisions during the season analysis
Some important personnel decisions have already been made: Shortly before the relegation first leg, VfB signed striker Serhou Guirassy on loan from FC Stade Rennes for 9 million euros. A new number one should come, since neither Fabian Bredlow nor Florian Müller were able to completely convince. Tanguy Coulibaly and Antonis Aidonis no longer have a chance in Stuttgart. Tiago Tomás, on loan from Sporting Lisbon, is overpriced with a €15m buy option and the departure of Croatia international Borna Sosa is unlikely to be avoided.

When asked about his future, Sosa also left a remaining chance open for VfB on “Sky”: “I can’t say that. Everything can happen. I’ve been here in Stuttgart for five years. If everyone stays, this team will have a chance to do good things next season. Anything can happen to me, it can also be that I stay. The whole team wants to show that we can do more than relegation.”
Coach Hoeneß is not up for discussion in the analysis. He only came to VfB at the beginning of April. In eight league games, he conceded only one defeat. Then followed the two victories in the relegation. In a total of twelve games, there is an average of 1.83 points – next year he should save VfB another shaky season.

“He immediately found a connection to the team. He had a clear game idea and conveyed it very well from day one,” said Wehrle. “Sebastian is a great guy. It’s fun to talk to him, and it’s certainly fun to celebrate with him a bit.” Wehrle was able to see that for himself on the return trip from Hamburg to Stuttgart. “Now, three or four beers are drunk relatively quickly, I think. Something has to fall off now. We have a long journey home, a lot of time … I can’t guarantee anything,” Hoeneß announced.
