Bayer duo firmly planned
Bayer Leverkusen’s club boss Fernando Carro has ruled out a departure from coach Xabi Alonso and top talent Florian Wirtz this summer. “Xabi Alonso continues. He’s good for us. And we’re doing him good too,” said the Spaniard “Cologne City Gazette”. The former Bayern professional Alonso took up his first position as a first division coach in Leverkusen at the beginning of October 2022 and, despite a contract until 2024, quickly aroused the interest of other top clubs. Most recently, the trainer already said: “I’m very happy with the team and with the club. I’m not worried about my future.”
Similar to Alonso, Carro commented on the 20-year-old youngster Wirtz. “He can still develop with us, with us he can also make mistakes that might have different consequences somewhere else. He has outstanding quality, but it’s good to be here for his personal development,” said the CEO, referring to the contract term until 2027: “He’s satisfied, we’re satisfied, there are clear agreements – nothing will work out happen.”

Although Leverkusen only finished sixth in the Bundesliga season, according to Carro, they still claim to be among the top four in the league. “In terms of resources, if you look at club turnover, we’re in the top four. Of course far away from Bayern Munich, also far away from Borussia Dortmund and Leipzig, but still ahead of the other clubs. We will start the season again next year with the goal of the Champions League,” emphasized the 58-year-old.
