Beach handball players must leave European Championship gold to Germany

BEACH HANDBALL – The Dutch ladies lost the final to Germany at the European Beach Handball Championship in Portugal. The team with two players from Drenthe in its ranks lost in the shoot-out.

Eva Heuten from Gasselternijveen was soon accurate on the sand of Nazaré and put the Netherlands ahead. However, the German women were able to come back after which it went right away. The decision of the first set came in the last minute. After a nice block by Marit van Ede, the Netherlands was able to extend the lead to 20-16, after which the Germans scored again and brought the final score of the set to 20-18.

The Netherlands, with Claudia ter Wal from Beilen also in the selection, could not impress in the second set. The Netherlands could keep up with the German women until 10-10, but after that the Germans gave gas. Germany won the second set 20-14.

Due to the tie, shoot-outs had to decide. Heuten, who scored six points in the game, was one of two Dutchmen to miss in the shoot-out. Top scorer Anna Buter also missed the German goal. Since the German women remained clear, the gold went to Germany for the second time in a row.
