Despite a long minority
Despite being outnumbered for a long time, the German U17 made it into a European Championship semi-final for the first time since 2017. Coach Christian Wück’s team defeated Switzerland 3-2 (1-1, 0-1) on penalties in Debrecen on Saturday and thus secured participation in the U17 World Cup at the end of this year. On Tuesday, the German junior team will play against Poland for the first time in a final in this age group since 2015. The final will take place on June 2nd.
The game started with a double setback for Germany after a crossbar hit in the early stages. Maxim Dal from Mainz saw a red card for a foul in the penalty area (15th minute), and the Swiss took the lead with a penalty kick through Winsley Boteli (16th). But the DFB selection fought back into the game, BVB striker Paris Brunner scored after half-time to make it 1-1 (49th). Because neither team managed to score in regular time, the decision was made on penalties.
