Plate riot ends with a fizz: horses are still welcome in Zeegser Duinen

The ‘no entry for horses’ signs along hiking trails in the Zeegser Duinen have been removed by the municipality of Tynaarlo. This is to the relief of horse owner Arjen Schuiling.

Schuiling sounded the alarm earlier this year when he came across the signs. His customers eagerly made use of these paths. Schuiling submitted a notice of objection and was invited for a meeting with responsible alderman Jelbrich Peters (PvdA).

Schuiling calls that conversation ‘constructive’. “I was immediately taken seriously. The alternative route that the municipality had previously proposed was looked at, but we jointly came to the conclusion that that route could only lead to accidents.”

The municipality’s main argument for placing the signs was the carrying capacity of a bridge in the Zeegser Duinen. It was feared that bridge could not hold a horse. “It was therefore proposed to have strength calculations done,” says Schuiling. “That was not possible in the Netherlands, but in England this had already been done with a copy of this bridge. It showed that the bridge can carry several horses at once.”

That is now reason for the municipality to remove the signs. Schuiling can expect an official message from Tynaarlo one of these days. He is happy that this situation ends with a fizzle. “Compliments to the alderman, who handled this well and really stood for this. That can also be said.”
