Photos of Amini’s family show that the window over her tombstone and her portrait were smashed. Her brother announced via Instagram that this was already the second attack in recent months. “Even the glass of your tombstone disturbs them,” Ashkan Amini wrote. “No matter how many times they break it, we will fix it. Let’s see who gets tired first.”
According to Mahsa Amini’s father, the authorities previously hindered the installation of the protective glass by threatening a local welder.
The young woman died in the hospital of the Iranian capital Tehran on September 16, 2022, three days after she was arrested by the vice squad for violating strict Iranian dress codes. The rules oblige Iranian women to cover their hair completely with a headscarf.
Witnesses said the 22-year-old was beaten while in custody. Amini died of her injuries a few days later.
Her death sparked protests that soon spread across the country. These protests have left hundreds dead and thousands of demonstrators arrested in the violent crackdown by the security forces. Since December, seven protesters have also been executed.
