Points deducted for Juventus remain – Champions League participation in danger

Judgment of the Court of Appeal

Juventus Turin are again deducted ten points after a ruling by the appeals court of the Italian football governing body FIGC. Juve is therefore in danger of missing out on participating in the Champions League next season. In its verdict on Monday, the court was only slightly below the eleven points deducted by chief prosecutor Giuseppe Chinè.

Although the sentence has been reduced somewhat, it could still ensure that the “old lady” is not represented in international business in the coming season. Due to the ten points deduction, Juventus slipped from second place out of the top 4 and thus out of the Champions League ranks. AC Milan are currently five points away in fourth place. In the evening, the record champions meet Empoli away and then, like all the other clubs, have two more games in front of them. The club announced an appeal.

The Supreme Sports Court of Italy’s National Olympic Committee (Coni) ruled in April that the case must be dealt with again by the judiciary of the football association. The judges upheld a complaint by Juventus, which is now suffering another setback. The case is about the fact that Juventus is said to have fudged the books for years through fictitious market evaluations of its professionals in transfers. The supreme court of the FIGC association therefore deducted 15 points from Turin in the current championship in January – this penalty has now been reduced to ten points after it had been suspended in the meantime.

Seven former Juve managers who were also accused, such as ex-professional Pavel Nedved, who were banned in the first trial, were acquitted this time. The former club bosses around President Andrea Agnelli had already been suspended at the beginning of the year – the highest Coni sports court had not revised their sentence either.

Juventus not only has to answer to a sports court because of this cause. In the previous week, prosecutor Chinè had reported the association because it is said to have illegally booked and concealed salary payments in the millions. The first hearing in this process is scheduled for June 15th.
