Without DFB juniors & defending champions
The U20 World Cup starts in Argentina on Saturday afternoon (local time). In the opening games (20:00 CET) Guatemala and New Zealand as well as USA and Ecuador will face each other. The 24 participants are split into six groups of four, with the top two teams in each group and the top four third-place finishers advancing to the round of 16. The DFB juniors are not there for the second time in a row after 2019 – the edition two years ago was not held due to the corona pandemic.
Defending champions Ukraine also failed to qualify, having beaten South Korea 3-1 in the final four years ago. The Dominican Republic and Israel are participating for the first time. By far the most valuable team is Brazil with a squad value of 93.5 million euros. England (71.7 million euros) and Argentina (50.5 million euros) follow. The most valuable players are the Englishman Carney Chukwuemeka (Chelsea), each with a market value of 15 million euros, as well as the Brazilian duo Andrey Santos (Vasco da Gama; loan from Chelsea) and Marcos Leonardo (FC Santos).
A total of ten players from Germany are taking part in the U20 World Cup. The trio Anrie Chase (VfB Stuttgart), Taichi Fukui (FC Bayern) and Shio Fukuda (Gladbach) represent Japan, Justin Che (TSG Hoffenheim) and Kevin Paredes (VfL Wolfsburg) are on duty for the USA. In addition, Bayern’s Mamin Sanyang will wear the Gambia jersey, Nuremberg’s Gustavo Puerta will represent Colombia, Paderborn’s Bashir Humphreys will represent England, Freiburg’s Ji-han Lee will represent South Korea and Bonner SC’s Roman Doulashi will represent Iraq.
