At the start of the 37th matchday in the 3rd division, SV Waldhof Mannheim lost to TSV 1860 Munich. The game was already decided at half-time.
The air is out at SV Waldhof Mannheim. After the two defeats in Zwickau and against VfB Oldenburg it was the next bankruptcy on the penultimate day of the 3rd division. Coach Christian Neidhart’s team lost 3-1 (0-3) to TSV 1860 Munich on Friday evening. So the Palatinate only has one chance to bring the season to a happy conclusion after missing out on promotion – on the last day of the game in front of their home crowd against Duisburg.
Three aluminium, three goals
From the start, a lively duel developed in Munich between the sixties and SV Waldhof. First Mannheim’s captain Marcel Seegert headed the crossbar of the Munich goal (12th minute), just three minutes later the ball was on the other side of the net. Semi Belkahia played a high ball behind the Mannheim defense, Marcel Seegert misjudged and Stefan Lex started behind him. The attacker, who will leave the club at the end of the season, put the ball past keeper Lucien Hawryluk into the goal – 1:0 (15th).
Hawryluk, who stood in for Jan-Christoph Bartels in the Waldhof goal and celebrated his third division debut, got more and more to do as a result. In the 18th minute, Yannick Deichmann failed to hit the post with a header, then Hawryluk saved against Belkahia’s close-range shot. Again just four minutes later, Deichmann hit the post again (22′).
And when the game had calmed down a bit, the hosts struck again: Fynn Lakenmacher dropped Julian Riedel and pushed the ball past goalkeeper Hawryluk into the net – 2:0 (38 ‘). The 22-year-old keeper was not to be envied on his debut, as the bell rang a third time before the break in Mannheim. Hawryluk parried Deichmann’s shot, but ex-Mannheim player Jesper Verlaat sunk the ball to make it 3-0 at the break (42’).
Mannheim’s goal comes too late
The great tension was gone after the break. Nevertheless, Waldhof Mannheim tried to somehow bring about a sense of achievement. In the 57th minute, Belkahia fouled substitute Marten Winkler more on the penalty area line than in front of it, but the visitors only got a free kick. The following attempt by Thomas Pledl was blocked by the Munich Wall. A volley shot by Seegert in the 78th minute didn’t find the desired target either.
As the game drew to the final whistle, there was excitement on the pitch again. Marco Höger failed with a header at 1860 goalkeeper Tom Kretzschmar, the ball flew in a high arc through the penalty area and landed on Deichmann’s arm. Referee Mitja Stegemann pointed to the point – penalty kick for SV Waldhof. Bentley Baxter Bahn converted safely (84th) to 1: 3 final score from Mannheim’s point of view.
On the last day of the 2022/2023 season, Waldhof Mannheim meets MSV Duisburg at home (May 27, 1:30 p.m.). Then it comes to Farewell to Marc Schnatterer, who will end his professional career after the season.
