Arnold Schwarzenegger looks back on his “Terminator” days in a new interview. The Austrian actor and former California governor reveals he had a fight with director James Cameron at the time. The reason: He didn’t feel comfortable pronouncing the English abbreviation “I’ll” instead of “I will”. He even thought the saying was stupid.
He continues to tell the Hollywood Reporter about the quarrels with the maker of the 80s classic at the time: “I thought it would be stronger to say: ‘I WILL be back’ [statt ,I’ll be back‘]. Cameron said, ‘Are you the screenwriter now? It’s just a word. Don’t tell me how to write. I’m not telling you how to act.’ I said, ‘You’re telling me how to act every damn minute! What are you talking about?!'”
Cameron reportedly objected, “Arnold, you think it sounds funny. But it does not. What makes it great is that you sound different than me or Charlie over there. That’s what it is. So just say it ten times. Say it in different ways. I keep the camera rolling. Then we choose one.'” Schwarzenegger practiced it several times, but: “I thought it was stupid.”
Still, Schwarzenegger embraced his slogan after the success of The Terminator, admitting, “So the movie came out. I was in Central Park. A guy came up to me and said, ‘Say the spell!’” And that’s how it’s been done to this day. Nevertheless, the 75-year-old does not want to play another franchise film in the series.
Schwarzenegger updates: New Netflix action series and a self-help book
From May 25, the Austrian, who has lived in the USA for decades, can be seen in the new series “FUBAR”. With this he makes his debut in series television. Monica Barbaro (“Top Gun: Maverick”) plays alongside Schwarzenegger in the eight episodes of the US television series. The idea came from Nick Santora (“Dog Gone”), who also acted as showrunner.
