The reading skills and reading pleasure of students in the Netherlands have continued to decline, according to international research.
The result: for the first time, Dutch students are worse at reading than the average student in Western countries.
Last week, the Education Inspectorate announced that one-fifth of HAVO and VWO students with an unsatisfactory mark for Dutch final exams went on to higher education.
And 15 percent of MBO-2 graduates leave school illiterate, which means they do not understand letters from the government, for example.
