Wannsee, Müggelsee and other bathing spots are tempting again: At the start of the season, according to the authorities, the water quality is very good in most places.

According to the State Office for Health and Social Affairs (Lageso) on Monday, almost all of the 39 bathing areas in the capital were classified as “suitable for bathing”.

“So nothing stands in the way of bathing in the best spring weather,” said Lageso President Alexander Straßmeier. Water samples would be taken at the bathing areas every two weeks until mid-September and examined for certain intestinal bacteria in the laboratory. In addition, the occurrence of algae is monitored.

Before going on a trip to the lake or river, those who are interested can find out more about the local water quality on the Internet. Some of the results from predictions are also included in the evaluation.

While large and popular baths such as the Wannsee lido had a green symbol on Monday, the bathing traffic light was yellow at several bathing spots on the Unterhavel: “Bathing is not recommended”. According to Lageso, the assessment can change temporarily.

In previous years, heavy rain on the Unterhavel had already led to impairment of the water quality: Rainwater mixed with waste water can then flow directly from the sewage system into bodies of water.
