Italian soccer player Armando Izzo has received an almost five-year prison sentence for his part in the match-fixing scandal.

Izzo, 31, who represented the Italian national team in three matches, received the sentence as part of a wider match-fixing scandal that Italian authorities have been investigating for years.

Izzo’s involvement in the activities run and organized by the Naples area mafia, the Camorra, dates back almost ten years. At that time, Toppari played in Serie B in Avellino’s team.

In the verdict, Izzo was considered to have closely joined the inner circle of the core group that agreed on match-fixing. The player’s cousin led one of the mafia organizations that plotted match-fixing. The cousin received a sentence of one and a half years.

Izzo, who represents AC Monza in Serie A this season, has a prison sentence of four years and ten months.

The decision is not legally binding. Izzo plans to appeal his sentence.
