Werder Bremen: Ole Werner welcomes Baumann’s extension

Werder Bremen coach Ole Werner welcomed the extension of the contract with the Bremen managing director and sports director Frank Baumann.

“I rate that positively. For me personally, I like working with Frank Baumann and I’m happy that things are continuing like this,” said the 33-year-old in a virtual media round with journalists from Bremen.

The runner-up in the 2nd Bundesliga had extended the contract with Frank Baumann, which was due to expire at the end of the season, until 2024 the day before. The continuation of this cooperation was questionable for a long time because Baumann was heavily criticized after being relegated to the Bundesliga in the summer.

After the seventh win in the seventh game under Werner, who signed at the end of November, Bremen are in one of the two direct promotion places for the first time this season, even if the new coach believes that “this short-term winning streak” is not the trigger for the contract extension Bauman was.

Nevertheless, Werner believes that the decision on this important personnel issue could help his team in the promotion race. “I welcome clarity wherever it is possible. And there is clarity there now. That can only do us good,” said the coach. “You have to assume that four or five teams will remain in the draw until the penultimate or third-last match day. And we want to be part of it. It will remain exciting.”
