Crisis at Bayern Munich: Kahn under fire – is a successor ready?

The fuss about Oliver Kahn’s future at Bayern is getting bigger and bigger. Although the CEO is still in office, there is open speculation about possible successors. The people of Munich are even said to be holding talks with a possible candidate.

The surprising appearance of Uli Hoeneß during the training of his crisis Bayern only fueled speculation about the future of CEO Oliver Kahn. Honorary President Hoeneß spent 15 minutes discussing things with head coach Thomas Tuchel on Wednesday (April 26) before the practice session, possibly sending out a signal that he is increasingly taking matters into his own hands with the record German champions.

Kahn later appeared on the pitch for a few minutes and briefly observed the Munich stars preparing for the game against Hertha BSC on Sunday (3:30 p.m./Live report to listen to in the BR24 Live Center).

Axel Hellmann is said to be a candidate to succeed Kahn

According to media reports on Wednesday, Kahn’s post is shaking more and more. After the end of the DFB Cup and the Champions League and the loss of the table lead, the management team around the former international goalkeeper has come into focus. Various names are already being traded. For example, the name of the former DFL managing director Christian Seifert was mentioned in connection with a possible successor to Kahn.

As the TV broadcaster Sky reports, Eintracht Frankfurt’s board spokesman Axel Hellmann is a promising candidate for Kahn’s successor. Accordingly, talks are said to have already taken place – according to dpa information, however, not specifically about a Kahn successor. Other newspapers report that there is nothing to the rumors that Hellmann will not move to Munich.

Hellmann had previously been associated with a move to the top of the German Football League, which he is currently leading on an interim basis with Oliver Leki from Freiburg. Now the 51-year-old lawyer, who still has a contract with the Hessians until 2027, is said to be the favorite of the Munich supervisory board.

Supervisory Board decides in May

It is precisely this supervisory board that will meet on May 22nd for its already eagerly awaited regular meeting. Before that, no decision can be expected in the debate about the executive floor. The outcome of the title fight in the Bundesliga should have a significant influence on the future of the Munich management level.

If Bayern overtake Dortmund in the remaining five games and at least polish up the messed-up season a bit, that could also have a positive effect on the mediocre job reference of Kahn and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic.

Hoeneß is appearing again – a warning sign?

Salihamidzic could benefit from the fact that Hoeneß has been one of his advocates for years. But the Bosnian is also in the light of public criticism because of his personnel policy. In retrospect, his transfer activities are no longer viewed as positively as at the beginning of the season.

Hoeneß watches the Mia-san-mia disaster with concern. This was illustrated by his surprising visit before Bayern training. The 71-year-old is appearing more and more and also lets the hitherto quite hapless coach Tuchel feel it. Hoeneß’ word and opinion still has weight on the Isar – and Hoeneß sits on the supervisory board, which Kahn could dismiss at any time.
