Why yellow bags can be life-threatening for hedgehogs

For us there is only rubbish in the yellow sacks, but hedgehogs suspect a feast here: the animals rummage through the sacks in search of leftovers – and may not be able to get out.

Yellow sacks waiting on the street for garbage collection can pose a danger to hedgehogs.

Angelika Nelson from the State Association for Bird and Nature Conservation (LBV) therefore advises hanging the bags with plastic waste on the fence at a little distance from the ground.

Or you don’t put them out on the street the evening before garbage collection, but only early in the morning. Then the nocturnal hedgehogs are no longer out and about.

Hedgehogs smell the leftovers in the sack

According to the nature conservation association LBV, hedgehogs look for food in household waste, especially in urban areas. Observations of living or dead hedgehogs in our habitats are reported to him via the citizen researcher project “Hedgehogs in Bavaria”.

If the hedgehogs don’t find enough insects in gardens and parks, they also look for leftovers in the rubbish, such as canned cat food or aluminum bowls.

To do this, they tear up the foil on the sacks or crawl into open bags.

There they can become trapped between the cans and injure themselves. And of course it can also happen that they are taken away by the garbage disposal.
