Iceland unveils new national coach

Norway’s Åge Hareide will be the new coach of the Icelandic national football team. This was announced by the Icelandic association.

“Åge Hareide is a very experienced coach who knows what it takes to be successful,” said association president Vanda Sigurgeirsdóttir.

Hareide explained that he has been following the Icelandic national team for a while. “I look forward to the challenge of helping the team succeed,” he said, according to the statement. “Iceland has a lot of strong players.” His goal is to qualify for the European Championship in 2024.

Most recently, the 69-year-old Hareide coached the Swedish club Malmö FF. During his career, Hareide was national coach in Norway from 2003 to 2008 and in Denmark from 2016 to 2020. The Icelandic footballers will play their first games with Hareide as coach in June’s Euro qualifiers against Slovakia and Portugal.
