Train traffic between Diksmuide and Lichtervelde again

The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. at a level crossing in Esen, a sub-municipality of Diksmuide. One person was hit by the train that was on its way from De Panne to Antwerp.

Evacuation

There were about eighty people on board. They were evacuated by the NMBS around 1 pm and were taken to Kortemark station by bus. Due to the incident, train traffic between Diksmuide and Lichtervelde was interrupted all afternoon. The disruption is likely to continue for several hours. The NMBS will deploy replacement buses on the route.

Regular train traffic was able to resume around 4 p.m., although consequential delays remain possible. “Fortunately, the evening rush hour will be able to proceed reasonably normally,” says Thomas Baeken, spokesman for Infrabel.
