Electricity went down by twelve percent, and natural gas even saw a reduction of around 21 percent compared to the previous year. This was reported by the editorial network Germany (RND/Tuesday editions) from a survey by the comparison portal Check 24. “Due to the sharp rise in gas prices last year, consumers were particularly frugal,” said Steffen Suttner, Energy Manager at Check 24. The average consumption per household went down down to almost 15,400 kilowatt hours. In 2021 it was a good 4000 kilowatt hours (kWh) more.
A look at the individual federal states makes it clear that households in the city states of Hamburg, Berlin and Bremen were able to show by far the lowest consumption in 2022. Berlin is right at the front with just under 11,000 kWh. Households in the cities have the smallest living space. There is a large middle field with Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein or Brandenburg, where between 15,000 and a good 17,000 kWh were consumed – here the larger living space per household plays a role. An outlier is Saxony with almost 19,600 kWh. It is striking that significantly more gas was needed in the east than in the west. According to the report, this could be related to lower temperatures and/or less well-insulated buildings.
