DFB: Schönweitz is moving to FSV Mainz 05 as director of football development

FSV “outstandingly positioned”

Coach Meikel Schönweitz is moving from the German Football Association to FSV Mainz 05. The association and club announced this on Tuesday. The 43-year-old is the head coach of the U-national teams and is leaving the DFB after nine years. With his move to Mainz, Schönweitz is returning to the club where he began his professional football career in 2010. He works there as director of football development, the club said.

Mainz sports director Christian Heidel explained: “With Volker Kersting (Head of Youth; ed.) and Meikel Schönweitz, we are now excellently positioned at the top of our successful youth academy. With his many years of expertise in German youth football, Meikel will not only continue to advance the sporting development of the youth academy, but will also immediately take on tasks in the licensing area. We would also like to thank the DFB for their willingness to let Meikel out of his contract at an early stage to enable him to take on his new role with us as soon as possible.”
