Charles Aránguiz leaves Bayer Leverkusen for Internacional

“Farewell in Friendship”

Ex-captain Charles Aránguiz is moving to SC Internacional Porto Alegre with immediate effect after around eight years at Bayer Leverkusen. A return to the Brazilian club, from which the Chilean came to the “Werkself” in 2015, was already certain for the summer.

“Charly has had a difficult time over the past six months due to his injury. It would not have been possible for him to get to his usual level in the final phase of the current season. We have therefore complied with his wish to return to South America two months earlier than planned in order to systematically build up his new club on site,” said sporting director Simon Rolfes. Aránguiz made 15 appearances (two goals) this season before a calf injury slowed him down in late October.

The move to Internacional, originally planned for the summer, was announced in mid-February, Aránguiz had signed a preliminary contract until 2025. The 97-time national player is one of the most expensive departures in the club’s history when he moved to Leverkusen for 13 million euros. About his end at Bayer he said: “Now I want to spend the rest of my career in South America, closer to my family. But I would also like to thank the fans in black and red in particular – for me it is a goodbye in friendship.”
