Unemployed coach Luis Enrique wants “premier league experience”

Spaniard fuels Spurs rumour

Almost four months after leaving Spain’s head coach, Luis Enrique said in an interview with the radio network “Cadena Ser‘ commented on his future. The 52-year-old has received several offers to work as national coach again. However, he is flirting with a commitment in the English Premier League – the ex-coach of FC Barcelona has been traded on the island since last week as a possible successor to Antonio Contes at Tottenham Hotspur.

And against this background, Enrique’s statements may well be interpreted by one or the other as a “wave with the fencepost”. “I would like to have an experience in the Premier League, but I would only accept an interesting project,” said Enrique, a native of Gijon. He would only switch to a club “where I can do big, important things. (…) I would like to take over a team that strives to win trophies.” Fourth-placed Tottenham have been waiting for their next title for 15 years. The expectations at White Hart Lane for a new coach are high. In addition to Enrique, Julian Nagelsmann – who is reportedly not available at short notice – and former Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino, Ange Postecoglou (Celtic), Roberto De Zerbi (Brighton & Hove Albion), Thomas Frank (Brentford), Rúben Amorim (Sporting Lisbon) and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Oliver Glasner have been traded.

Luis Enrique on future coaching job: keep all options open

When it comes to future decisions, he wants to “keep all options open,” continued the Spaniard, who had also been linked to a possible post at his home club. Asked about the speculation about second division Gijon, Enrique said: “Not at the moment. (…) In the future? Surely. If I ever do it, it will be with the freedom that my experience as a coach gives me. Maybe in five or ten years, if I feel like it and Sporting is interested.”

The former midfielder, who scored 103 goals in 400 LaLiga games and played for Real Madrid for five years and Barcelona for eight years during his career, has also had “several offers from national teams”. However, Enrique said there was no contact with the Brazilian association, whose national team was coached for the first time on an interim basis by U20 coach Ramon Menezes after Tite’s resignation last week.
