National coach Van Marwijk fired from United Arab Emirates

Football coach Bert van Marwijk has been fired as national coach of the United Arab Emirates. The 69-year-old coach, born in Deventer, has to leave, just like the rest of the technical staff, the national football association has announced. Van Marwijk had been the trainer of the national team since the end of 2020 and was still in the running for a place at this year’s World Cup in Qatar.

A successor to the Dutchman was not immediately announced. Van Marwijk was also national coach of the Gulf state for a period in 2019.

The Emirates are third in the qualifying group for the World Cup. The best two qualify, for the number 3 there will be a second chance.
