Some flights to and from Eindhoven Airport will not take place on Saturday, because climate activists from Extinction Rebellion then want to take action at the airport. Several hundred supporters may participate. It is not yet known what exactly the group plans to do.
Eindhoven Airport had already warned that the demonstration could have consequences for the journey to, from or via the airport. The Transavia flight to Salzburg and back has been cancelled. The flight to Palma de Mallorca and back has been postponed to Sunday.
Flights moved
The flight to Gran Canaria does not depart from Eindhoven but from Schiphol, and the return flight also arrives at Schiphol. The flight from Seville does not arrive in Eindhoven, but in Rotterdam, and the flight to the Portuguese Faro departs from Rotterdam The Hague Airport. An aircraft from Alicante also lands in Rotterdam on Saturday, and then flies from Rotterdam back to Alicante.
The other airlines flying to and from Eindhoven on Saturday are TUIfly, Ryanair, Wizz Air and Pegasus. It is not yet known whether they will also cancel or move flights.
Demonstration on boulevard
Extinction Rebellion previously said it expected about five hundred demonstrators. According to the climate movement, the demonstration on the boulevard next to the terminal will last from noon to half past two. A spokeswoman for the action group did not rule out participants entering the airport grounds, as previously happened at Schiphol. “But to be honest, that doesn’t seem very sensible to me; this is military territory.”
At the beginning of November, demonstrators from Extinction Rebellion and Greenpeace climbed over the fence at Schiphol to the area where private planes were parked. The group took place under several jets and chained themselves to prevent the planes from taking off. Police detained hundreds of activists.
