The municipality of Coevorden will re-examine the policy regarding taking a mobility scooter in the bus taxi. Until a decision has been made on this, users such as Therese Wolthuis from Aalden can continue to take their mobility scooter with them.

Earlier this year, the municipality decided that this was no longer allowed. People who used this service received a letter last December stating that the rules for the so-called Wmo transport pass had been adjusted, reports SO!34.

Coevorden gave the reason that there were insufficient drivers for the taxis and that the pass is not always used for its intended purpose.

The Aaldense Therese was affected by this decision. Due to an accident at the age of 9, she lost her lower leg. Due to the deformity of her spine and a broken hip, she experiences a lot of pain every day. Eight years ago she decided to purchase a mobility scooter. Thanks to the transport pass, she can visit the supermarket, psychologist, church and hospital.

“I can’t do this kind of thing with a walker because I can’t walk more than 100 meters,” she previously explained. The intended tightening would mean that Therese would have to leave her mobility scooter at home and that she would have to keep an eye on the kilometers driven.

VVD Coevorden decided to ask written questions to councilor Joop Slomp (PvdA). He indicated that contact has now been made with those involved: by telephone or via a home visit. “The residents involved have been told that the municipality will reconsider the policy,” Slomp said in the response.

Until there is more clarity about this, those involved may continue to take their mobility scooter in the taxi. “Because this concerns four residents, for privacy reasons we cannot share any further information about the content and outcomes of the conversations.”
