Expensive aftermath
Leverkusen apparently has to pay Hjulmand millions

For Kasper Hjulmand, the Bundesliga chapter ends quickly. His now former employer is said to have given a lot of money for the end.
The separation from coach Kasper Hjulmand has financial consequences for Bayer Leverkusen. The Dane’s contract would normally have run until 2027. As the “Bild” newspaper reports, Leverkusen has to pay Hjulmand a severance payment of around two million euros for the early separation.
Hjulmand took over the “Werkself” from Dutch coach Erik ten Hag at the beginning of September after the second matchday. Bayer separated from ten Haag after just two months due to fundamental doubts about further cooperation. Immediately after the end of the season, Leverkusen’s sports director Simon Rolfes left Hjulmand’s future open and announced an early decision.
“Not the necessary trust”
Last week, Leverkusen announced the Dane’s departure and introduced Carles Martínez Novell as their new head coach. Rolfes said about the separation from Hjulmand: “The developments of the last few months have not given us the necessary confidence to go into the next season with him and drive forward the development that we had imagined.”
Hjulmand led Leverkusen to third place by the Christmas break with nine wins from 13 games. In the new year, however, he was unable to maintain the success rate at this level. With eight wins and 30 points from 19 games, Leverkusen slipped to sixth place between January and May and was pushed out of the important Champions League places by VfB Stuttgart and RB Leipzig. Hjulmand was not able to consistently get the most out of the squad.
