The NS station in Roermond will be extensively renovated in the coming months. The building, dating from the 19th century, will be restored to its former station status.
“The flower shop is moving and the kiosk is being replaced by a kind of station living room, so that you can sit warm and drink a cup of coffee later. Waiting for a train then becomes a lot more attractive,” says station manager Ger Pagters.
Characteristic building
The NS railway company wants to keep the old building, which is not listed as a monument, intact as much as possible. Demolition was out of the question. “Part of it is being renovated, but we want to maintain the appearance as much as possible, because this is a characteristic building for Roermond,” says Pagters.
Trains run
The renovation will take seven to eight months and the train passengers will notice something of that. “There will be nuisance, but the trains will continue to run, that’s the most important thing,” concludes the station manager.
‘Cozy appearance’
The old entrance to the Roermond station was built in 1993. But the building is much older. Project leader René Zirkzee, for example, found a photo from 1881 on which he based his plans. “We want to bring back that cozy look of the past and then in a slightly more open and transparent form,” says Zirkzee.
