Beau van Erven Dorens went through the dust in his talk show yesterday because of insulting the Sikh community. “I hereby offer my sincere apologies,” said the RTL star.
You could wait for Beau van Erven Dorens to apologize when he deliberately offended the Sikh community in his talk show a month ago. He discussed jokes about songs with dinner guest Timur Perlin. One of those songs was a kind of floating yoga song, but that turns out to be a religious mantra for Sikhs.
‘I’m coming’
Beau spoke about ‘a Buddhist mantra song, in which you hear ‘I’m coming, put that h**r on your site’ for minutes. Sikhs, who believe in God in their own way, shouldn’t whine if they take offense at this, Beau shouted. “Stop it man. That hassle! Humor should always be a little over the edge!” the presenter exclaimed.
Well, the Sikhs have made themselves heard on that. And yesterday there were three at Beau’s table. “I am very happy that you are here. I have to explain why you are here, because a Sikh does not often sit at the table in a talk show.”
knee drop
How did Beau come up with that invitation? “So this is a very important mantra for you, where you do your prayers and then a very raunchy text came up on it. (…) You were incredibly hurt. Wounded to the depths of your soul, because I hurt your faith in that way and stepped on your soul.”
“The funny thing is that a few weeks ago I was in a taxi after a broadcast in Ahoy. In that taxi back to Amsterdam, I saw a man with a very nice beard and wearing a turban. At one point he says, really in The Hague: ‘Well, I finally have you in the car.’ And he went on to explain to me for 45 minutes why it was so offensive and I had to apologize.”
Sincere apologies
Beau has now done that. “I hereby offer my sincere apologies. It was not my intention at all to offend all of you and the 15,000 Sikhs and the 30 million that are in the world. I just had no idea, I was very, very unfamiliar with it. I thought: now I want to get to know you better. That is why I went to see you last Friday.”
Then images were started of Beau standing in a gurdwara, the place of worship of the Sikhs. “I was quite a bit nervous, because I thought: soon I will be stabbed or something, or they will be really furious. But you were very peaceful and you taught me how to pray.”
