Penalty drama about BVB talents in the Youth League

The Borussia Dortmund U19s were eliminated in the Youth League in a dramatic manner in the quarter-finals. In the duel with Hajduk Split, the BVB youngsters lost on penalties.

Only the 18th penalty decided the clash in Signal Iduna Park. BVB talent Filippo Mane was the only player who missed the point, Ante Kavelj then shot the Croatian representative into the round of the top four teams.

In regular time, Mate Antunović (72′) initially gave Hajduk Split the lead. Julian Rijkhoff equalized just four minutes later with a penalty (76th) for Borussia Dortmund.

Head coach Mike Tullberg’s BVB had more of a share of the game, but the Black and Yellows were only rarely able to create great opportunities.

In the third minute of added time, Michel Ludwig almost scored his own goal, but the crossbar saved BVB. In the dramatic penalty shootout, Dortmund ultimately lost out.

Youth League: BVB has to wait for participation in the semi-finals

The BVB youngsters had already been eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Youth League in the previous season. The Revierklub has so far been denied a jump into the semi-finals. Only FC Schalke 04 (2014) and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (2019) have made it into the semi-finals of the Youth League as German participants.

In the other quarter-finals, Sporting CP won 1-0 against Liverpool FC in Lisbon. AC Milan prevailed 2-0 against Atlético Madrid. AZ Alkmaar beat Real Madrid 4-0.
