Decrease in Dutch infection figures started, percentage of positive tests is also decreasing
The omikrone peak seems to have been reached in the Netherlands. The infection figures show a downward trend. With almost 81 thousand reported infections per day in the GGD test streets, the number of reports is still sky-high, but it is 7 percent lower than last week. The decrease follows almost 6 weeks of strong growth. Almost 3 in 5 corona tests are still positive, an indication that the number of infected persons is significantly higher than the number of reported infections. But the percentage of positive tests also shows a small change after a month of increase. The willingness to test peaked at the end of January, when the GGDs were working at their full capacity. About 136 thousand corona tests were carried out every day this week. Given the favorable corona figures, the cabinet wants to abolish most corona measures. The final decisions will be announced at a press conference on Tuesday. Death rates from covid-19 remain stable low. RIVM reported 70 deaths this week.
The omikrone peak also seems to have been reached in hospitals
In hospitals, the peak also seems to have been reached and the increase in the number of new corona patients is stabilizing. This is a positive sign, as hospital admissions are the most reliable indicator of the severity and course of an outbreak. With an average of 193 new corona patients every day, the influx this week is just as high as last week – a stabilization in other words, after two weeks of increase. Despite the high number of infections from omikron, the number of admissions has remained relatively low. Roughly a quarter of the patients admitted for other reasons happened to be infected in the hospital. At the beginning of December, at the peak of the delta wave in the hospital, admission rates were almost twice as high.
