Bert Trautmann at Manchester City, Steffen Hofmann at Rapid Vienna – and then Toni Kroos will soon be at Real Madrid when you think of eras of German footballers at clubs abroad. Shortly after winning the 2014 World Cup, the now 33-year-old midfielder switched from FC Bayern to the “Royals” and at the weekend he celebrated his 400th appearance in Real kit in the 3-1 home win against RCD Espanyol.
Kroos started at his home Santiago Bernabéu stadium and set up Vinicius Junior’s 22nd-minute equaliser. In addition to four Champions League trophies and three championships, Kroos has 27 goals and 88 assists for the Madrilenians. “400 games for Real Madrid. could have gone worse” wrote Kroos on Twitter.

Kroos has held the title as the German Real record player for a long time, overtaking Uli Stielike (308 appearances) in spring 2021. Since 2000, only one German player has played more games for a single club in the form of Hofmann, who is now the managing director of Rapids Completed abroad, as a query in the TM database revealed.
