Tom Egbers can no longer appear on television for the time being now that he has been exposed by de Volkskrant as a NOS bully, critics such as Chris Woerts and Angela de Jong believe. “I think it’s done.”
In addition to Jack van Gelder, Tom Egbers in particular has a major role in the Volkskrant revelations about transgressive behavior at NOS Sport. In a long article it is revealed today that he began an affair with a young intern, began to bully and intimidate her when it fell apart and that the editors put his hand over his head.
Cut throat
The now 65-year-old Tom messed around seventeen years ago with an intern who was 26 years (!) younger. After a cannonade of text messages, e-mails and calls, she falls for his advances and kisses a number of times. If it stays at that, the horror for the lady in question will begin. She is approached by Tom’s wife, to whom she confesses the affair.
De Volkskrant: “After that conversation, the situation escalated. In the editorial office, employees of NOS Sport see how Egbers begins to bully and intimidate her. In front of several colleagues, he calls her ‘the axis of evil’, ‘the poison’ and ‘serpent’. Also, when she walks by, he makes the hand gesture with which he pretends to cut someone’s throat.”
Trouble with women
The woman is forced to leave because of the harassment. The editors-in-chief knew about everything – she went to talk about it, accompanied by Jeroen Stekelenburg – but did not intervene. Later, presenter Aïcha Marghadi was advised by the same editors-in-chief not to take Tom as a mentor: “He has quite a bit of trouble with beautiful women.”
Tom says in a response that he is sorry. “Our relationship as such I deeply regret now, many years later. Because of the grief I’ve caused in my private life with it. The fact that she was in her twenties at the time and I was in my forties also counts heavily for me, looking back after all these years.”
However, the incident is not an isolated incident, the newspaper knows. “At the same time, a NOS colleague sends the young woman an e-mail, in the possession of de Volkskrant, following another incident at the editorial office. In it he says he is aware of several situations of transgressive behavior by Egbers towards women on the NOS editorial staff.
‘Tom has to leave TV’
Sports marketer Chris Woerts thinks Tom should be off the screen, he says Inside today. “Tom Egbers can no longer present Studio Sport on Sunday, can he? That’s not possible, is it? Look, that she kissed that girl: à la, but that he has stalked that girl or has shown annoying behavior: then he can never face TV next Sunday.”
Chris is very firm about it: “Tom Egbers can no longer be on television. That is not possible.”
Hélène Hendriks: “I don’t think it would be pleasant for him to do the summaries next Sunday. Of course that is not pleasant. I would also mark the place for a while.”
And René van der Gijp: “I find it unusual. I don’t think it’s appropriate. I think: would I do it? No, I wouldn’t.”
‘It’s finished’
Johan Derksen is the only one at the table who thinks it is all possible, but Wilfred Genee thinks fundamentally differently. “I am again the moral preacher, but I am surprised at this.”
AD opinion diva Angela de Jong catches up Jinek the expectation that it is over with Tom. “I think it’s done. I don’t see him just going to present Other Times Sport or the summaries of one thing or another.”
Jort Kelder thinks that goes a long way. He thinks Tom can continue with guidance. “Well, it’s been quite a while, hasn’t it? Shall we not immediately shoot such a great talent here on RTL 4?”
Politician Joost Eerdmans agrees. Bee On 1: “Just like with Matthijs van Nieuwkerk: you put a man like Tom Egbers away completely now. It may be ready. I take that quite seriously.”
No decision yet
The NOS says that it is not yet clear whether Tom will appear on television this weekend. When asked, NOS spokesman Koen Adriaanse does not say whether Tom Egbers will present NOS Studio Sport Eredivisie this weekend.
TV connoisseur Tina Nijkamp responds: “The strange thing is that the editor-in-chief, which has done NOTHING AT ALL with the intern’s complaints, that THAT editor-in-chief decides today or tomorrow whether Tom can still be on television for the time being. oh ok.”
