Emotional farewell to geologist Daniel Álvarez, one of the three who died in the Súria mine

Relatives, colleagues and friends have said the last goodbye to geologist Daniel Álvarez31 years old, a master’s student at the UPC and one of three fatalities of the accident last Thursday in the súria mine. The ceremony was held this Saturday afternoon in the Montserrat room of the Àltima funeral home, in Manresa, the city where the young man lived. The room has become too small to accommodate friends, university colleagues and mine workers. Inside, more than 150 people have gathered, sitting and standing, and outside, there was also a large group of people.

Residents of the city of Medellín, the parents and sister were unable to travel to attend the funeral and on behalf of the family, Elisabeth, Daniel Álvarez’s cousin, broadcast the entire event by videoconference via mobile phone.

Once the ceremony was over, there was an ovation from the street for Daniel Álvarez and then the cousin went outside and gave the thanks to the miners and the rest of the people who were there. He has also remarked that “Daniel has been doing what he liked to do, going into the mine.”

Official mourning will continue throughout Saturday, March 11. Numerous local entities have expressed their condolences through social networks, and the ‘caramellaires’ groups have suspended the rehearsals for the weekend. The parish of San Cristòfol has announced that the victims of the accident will be remembered at the mass this Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
