On Wednesday we can go to the polls for the elections of the Provincial Council and the water boards. But what do you choose when it comes to the water board? What are those elections about?
“The important themes have everything to do with climate,” says Geert-Jan ten Brink, dike warden of the Hunze en Aa’s water board. “The sea level is rising, the weather is becoming more extreme. How do we deal with this? What are the parties doing when it comes to the quality of the surface water? Do we remove medicine residues from the sewage water or not?”
Due to weather changes, the water authorities will be faced with the task of carrying out their activities in a different way in the coming years. “In the past, we focused on draining water,” says Ten Brink. “With extreme showers and extreme drought on the horizon, it is important that we start to retain water. The question is how we are going to do that.”
