Review: The Luka State :: More Than This

Equidistant from the music capitals of Manchester and Liverpool, the small town of Winsford is not one of the best starting points for a young rock band. Nor is the debut release likely to have proved beneficial for The Luka State’s career amid the pandemic in early 2021. It is all the more understandable that the quartet on their second work MORE THAN THIS demanded an even more uncompromising break out of the confinement with a rock sound that feeds on indie, alternative and punk.

While the opener “Bring Us Down” still has Britpop-like melodies, which is only reinforced by the slightly needy modulations by singer and guitarist Conrad Ellis, one encounters a number of other genre representatives from the island in the further course, such as Bush (“Two Worlds Apart”) or Biffy Clyro or Muse in the adrenaline rush “Tightrope (Walking On
A wire).

With straightforward, energetic songs that never lose sight of the stadium as a potential venue, The Luka State transport an immanent working-class ethos as a philanthropic philosophy of life. Accordingly, the heart and title piece, which breaks a lance for those (almost) forgotten by the system, is not the only expression of a great will to survive, even if it is the most hymnically empathetic.
