Apple abandoned fingerprint recognition when the iPhone X was announced.
The feature has not been seen in new iPhones since then. Fingerprint recognition has since been replaced by Apple’s face recognition.
The last iPhone with fingerprint recognition was the SE model, which was released in 2022.
A new patent (US 11600103 B2) raises hopes for the return of the feature. The patent was granted to Apple yesterday. This was reported by a news reporter about Apple’s patents Patently Apple -blog.
Laptop mag publication speculates that a new type of fingerprint recognition could be used again in the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro model.
Uses short-wave infrared
It is possible to install the patented fingerprint recognition either inside the screen or under it. The technology has been developed since 2013.
Short-wave infrared is used for fingerprint identification, which enables minimization of weather effects and more accurate user identification.
With short-wave infrared, it is also possible to find out the humidity of the user’s finger, check the user’s pulse, find out the oxygen content of the user’s blood and the patterns of the blood vessels in the finger.
The technology also makes it possible to find out if the user is wearing a glove.
