Critically endangered rhino baby born in Czech safari park: third in a year | Animals

In a safari park in the Czech Republic, no fewer than three black rhinoceroses were born in a year. Unique, because the animals are seriously threatened with extinction, according to the international union for nature conservation IUCN.

The baby rhinoceros, a male, weighs 36 kilograms and was named Magashi. It was named after a peninsula in a national park in Rwanda where black rhinoceroses were returned from the Czech Republic in 2018.

“It is a very rare animal. In the past year, only six were born in zoos around the world, three of them with us,” says animal caretaker Jan Zdarek of safari park Dvur Kralove.

Magashi is the first offspring of father Embu, who was transferred from Chester, England in 2020, and of mother Maisha, who has already had several calves.

“The birth went very smoothly and quickly. Magashi will stay in a stable with his mother Maisha for several days and when the weather warms up, possibly sometime next week, we will try to let him out for the first time,” said Zdarek.
