Roest takes silver at 10 kilometers, world record Van der Poel

Patrick Roest also had to settle for silver in the 10 kilometers at the Beijing Olympics. The 26-year-old skater from Lekkerkerk, who previously just missed the gold in the 5000 meters, again had to tolerate only the Swedish top favorite Nils van der Poel with 12.44.59. Van der Poel was in a class of its own with a new world record of 12.30.74.

The bronze went to Davide Ghiotto. The Italian was well ahead of Roest’s schedule, but eventually exceeded his time with 12.45.98.

Jorrit Bergsma, who finished fifth in the 5000 meters, also grabbed the medals in the 10 kilometers. He came fourth. The winner of the Olympic 10 kilometers in Sochi 2014 conceded more than 18 seconds to the unapproachable Van der Poel with 12.48.94. Defending champion Ted-Jan Bloemen finished far off the podium.
