Tottenham, Conte: “Lost qualification in the first leg”

Out in the round of 16 without scoring a goal. Tottenham greets the Champions League, Milan ahead. Interviewed by Prime Video, the Spurs coach Antonio Conte spoke about the elimination, the season and also his future: “I have a contract expiring, let’s see how the season ends. Maybe they can even send me away. What matters is trying to work and raise the bar”.

These are Conte’s words to Prime Video: “We need to work to get competitive again at high levels. There is a long way to go. I remember that we went out in the Conference League and lost against Mura, Vitesse and Pacos de Ferreira, while this year we reached the round of 16. We took a step forward. Milan won the scudetto, and even in terms of history we are talking about two different teams. 14 months are not enough to become competitive. We need to work. My parents are committed, not I can say a lot. We need to be more decisive.”

So on the match: “We had prepared it differently. In the first half we struggled a lot. It’s not a question of quality, but of taking steps. We have to grow in personality and courage in this type of match. We had important defections, but not it could be an excuse. In the two games, perhaps we lost qualification in the first leg.”

Conte also spoke about his future: “I’m tried because I’m back from an operation. I continue to work, I have a contract with Tottenham and I respect it. At the end of the season, evaluations with the club will be made in the most serene way, I will say mine. What matters is trying to work and raise the bar. We’re having a hard time this year, unfortunately. Taking the level from average to fair/good isn’t easy.”
