Two of the four Americans attacked and kidnapped by gunmen in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas on Friday are still alive. The two others have died. State Governor Americo Villarreal said this today during a phone call with the Mexican president during a press conference.
Four Americans were shot at and kidnapped by gunmen in the Mexican town of Matamoros on Friday not long after crossing the border into the United States in a white car. Two of the victims died in that attack, the state governor said today after the four Americans were found. Of the two survivors, one is injured, the other is unharmed.
A Mexican official also told Reuters news agency that two of the Americans had been found dead. “The woman and another man” were still alive and safe in the hands of the authorities, it was said.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador reported that a person has been taken into custody in connection with the kidnapping.
The four Americans were identified earlier in the day by two South Carolina families. Latavia “Tay” Washington McGee, according to her family, went to Mexico for a cosmetic procedure and was accompanied by Zindell Brown, Shaeed Woodard and one last man identified only as Eric.
The attack was said to be the result of a misunderstanding in which the four Americans were not the intended victims. Investigators suspect that a Mexican cartel mistook them for Haitian drug smugglers, CNN reports.
