Farmers’ campaign: “Investments of 100,000 euros, but 0 valuation”
Danny Metsu mainly grows cauliflower and Brussels sprouts in Vlamertinge. His investments are huge, energy prices are heavy and production costs are skyrocketing. But that hardly translates into the price he gets today for his vegetables. “If we talk about Brussels sprouts, for example, we see the cost price increase by 1,100 to 1,200 euros per hectare. That also immediately means that we are taking a large financial risk.”
A new machine for harvesting Brussels sprouts easily costs 350,000 euros. “These are investments that we are making in order to work in the long term, together with the frozen factories. We want to build a sustainable relationship in the long term. This also includes a decent compensation, that we see our costs covered and preferably also a income, to be able to put a sandwich on the table for our family.”
Future vision needed
Danny Metsy has built a large water basin. This is also a significant but necessary investment to be able to bridge long periods of drought. But the low purchase price for the vegetables puts constant pressure on the future of the agricultural business. “My company has been in operation together with my son-in-law for three years. He also wants to get a vision for the future, so that he will be able to continue working with the frozen industry in the long term.”
Like many other growers, Danny Metsu feels that his efforts and investments are not appreciated.
