Márton Fucsovics has nipped the hope of a Dutch tournament victory in Rotterdam in the bud. The Hungarian, last year’s losing finalist, gave Tallon groenpoor the score: 6-4 7-6 (4). After the loss of Greek poor, there are no more Dutch players in the singles schedule.
After Botic van de Zandschulp surprisingly lost of the Czech qualifier Jiri Lehecky, it was the Greek track who had to uphold the national honour. Greek track, however, had a difficult start in its eighth final. He served in the opening game, trailed 0-40, but still won the game with five points in a row. At 2-2, Greek track, who had a hard time serving and having a hard time on his forehand at the start of the match, was broken after all. Fucsovics (30) did not let the 25-year-old Haarlemmer come back in the set, even though the forehand in particular ran a lot better at Greek track than in the first half of the set.
That in spite of the loss of the first set, Greek track had started to play better, became apparent in set two. The Dutch number 62 in the world initially kept his service games simpler and did little wrong, especially on his backhand. In the first service game of Fucsovics, the North Hollander got his first two break points of the game. He did not take advantage of that and at 2-2 he conceded his first breaking point of the set. He brushed that off and also because more and more sloppiness at Fucsovics crept into his game, the Dutchman smelled opportunities.
However, it was not possible to push through and despite breaking chances on both sides, the set ended in a tiebreak. Although Greek track in the previous round against Denis Shapovalov excelled, Fucsovics turned out to be of a different order. After minibreaks back and forth, Fucsovics made the decisive minibreak at 4-4. Greek track threw his racket on the ground out of frustration; he also knew that the game points would present themselves. That indeed happened and at 6-4 Fucsovics served the tiebreak and with that the match decisively.
Visa
,,I played better today than two days ago. Still I lose, that’s a shame. That is the difference with the challenger level: on this level you have to take every opportunity. I didn’t do that today,” said a disgruntled Greek track, who also said at Ziggo Sport that he had never really enjoyed playing tennis in the tournament.
On the way to America, where two major tournaments are planned in the coming period, it turned out that there are still a lot of problems for Greek track to overcome. “I still have the same problems with my visa,” the Dutchman said. “I hope I can solve it this week, but nothing is certain yet.”
Fucsovics will play against Andrej Roeblev in the quarterfinals. The second-seeded Russian won his eight-final match earlier today by South Korean Soonwoo Kwon.
