That Peter can rightly be called the chink king of North Holland becomes clear when he visits his own house in Heiloo. He has zero on the meter and also a negative footprint. That footprint indicates how much power you use, what you eat and how much waste you leave behind. To achieve this, Peter lives frugally, eats vegetarian food and only drinks water, because according to him, coffee accounts for seven percent of the deforestation on earth.
In addition, Peter invests money that he does not need in nature development. With the proceeds from his organic bed & breakfast, he has invested 100,000 euros in twenty years, including the Mosselwiel nature reserve in ‘t Zand. Where tulips used to bloom, meadow birds now roam.
He has achieved an energy-neutral house with solar panels, a heat pump, triple glazing and a sedum roof. As an energy coach he now passes on his knowledge to others. Research by the municipality of Alkmaar shows that its advice is followed by 64 percent of people.
