In the Jordanian port city of Aqaba, Palestinian and Israeli delegations met to find a solution to the growing violence in the region. Eleven Palestinians were killed in a raid on the West Bank on Wednesday, two Israelis died today.

Majed Faraj, who heads the Palestinian intelligence service, is present on the Palestinian side. Israel is represented by Ronen Bar, the head of Israel’s internal intelligence agency Shin Beth. American diplomat Brett McGurk and Jordanian and Egyptian diplomats are also present.

The main purpose of the most important meeting between Palestine and Israel in years would be to build confidence. In addition, it is also the intention that concrete measures are agreed so that the situation does not escalate further.

However, not everyone is pleased with the meeting. For example, Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, sees “the meeting with the Zionists” as “a break with the national Palestinian consensus” and as “a disregard for the blood of the martyrs.”

End the bloodshed

The Israeli army has been conducting many operations in the West Bank, a Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967 and a bastion of armed Palestinian groups, for almost a year now. “The decision to participate in the meeting (in Aqaba), despite the pain and carnage suffered by the Palestinian people, is motivated by the will to end the bloodshed,” the Fatah party of the party said. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas know on Twitter.

Two Israelis were killed today in Nablus. According to the Israeli army, fire was opened on the occupants of an Israeli vehicle at an intersection south of the city. Soldiers are in the area looking for the perpetrator(s).
