There was a sensation in the alpine skiing combination race. With the Austrian Johannes Strolz, an athlete who probably nobody had on the screen before won. A DSV star, on the other hand, disappointed.
The Austrian ski racer Johannes Strolz sensationally won the gold medal in the combined event at the Olympic Games, following in the footsteps of his father Hubert. The 29-year-old won in Yanqing after downhill and a slalom run, well ahead of Aleksander Aamodt Kilde (Norway/+0.59 seconds) and James Crawford (Canada/+0.68).
DSV player Jocher early out of medal races
Simon Jocher, who had a strong fifth place at the World Championships a year ago, missed the outsider’s chance of a medal due to a poor performance in the downhill. He then retired from the slalom. Top favorite Alexis Pinturault (France) also failed in the second discipline. World Champion Marco Schwarz (Austria) took fifth place.
Sensational winner Strolz had already been thrown out of the Austrian squad before the current season, he trained with the Germans and worked as a police officer. He was only allowed to continue in the World Cup because Adrian Pertl, who came second in the slalom at the World Championships, had torn his cruciate ligament. In January, Strolz, who prepares his skis himself, sensationally won the slalom in Adelboden with start number 38.
Father Hubert Strolz had won gold in Calgary in 1988 in the combination (at that time with two slalom runs) and silver in the giant slalom.
