Dutch coal-fired power stations may not operate at more than 35% of their maximum capacity in the coming years. In the short term, this ensures a significant reduction in CO2emissions from coal-fired power stations of approximately 6-7 megatons. The amendment to the Prohibition of Coal Act will come into effect on 1 January 2022 and will apply until the end of 2024. With this production capacity, security of supply is guaranteed, even in times of low energy production from solar and wind.

State Secretary Yeşilgöz-Zegerius: “From 2030 there will be no more coal-fired power stations in the Netherlands. This 3-year production limitation makes an important contribution to CO2short-term reduction. And in addition to the recently announced closure of the Onyx power station in Rotterdam, we are now continuing to reduce greenhouse gases at the other coal-fired power stations.”

The production limitation for the 3 coal-fired power stations in the Netherlands makes an important contribution to the implementation of the Urgenda judgment. The CO . is expected to be2emissions have been sufficiently reduced in subsequent years. The owners of the coal-fired power stations are financially compensated by the government for the lost income from the reduced electricity production up to and including 2024. The amount is determined in accordance with the calculation rules in the General Administrative Order and ultimately assessed by the European Commission in connection with state aid.
