First carnival in Pesse: ‘It goes beyond expectations’

Farmers, minions, Super Mario and Wednesday Addams. They all turned up in Pesse on Saturday afternoon. They were children who had dressed up for the carnival.

Pesse has no carnival tradition, but partly on the initiative of Tamara van Breukelen-Broeksmit, the folk festival came to the village. As a true Limburger, she knows how to celebrate carnival and she is not disappointed with how things are going in Pesse. “It exceeds expectations. You do hear some say ‘I’m not dressing up and I’m really not going in the polonaise.’ But we had more than 120 children in the afternoon, so we still had to buy everything,” she laughs.

Van Breukelen-Broeksmit came to Drenthe from Limburg eighteen years ago. In recent years she has returned to Heerlen to celebrate carnival. That is no longer necessary this year, although she did go to Limburg to score her carnival outfit. “We visited a very large store there,” says Van Breukelen-Broeksmit. In the end, she returned to Pesse with a pink baby outfit. “It’s just fun and it suits the kids well.”

Because in the afternoon is the carnival in Pesse – temporarily renamed Bospoeste – especially for the youth. And the folk festival is a hit with the children, according to the reactions. “I really like it, especially because we were allowed to stand on the cart. It’s super cozy and I think everyone thinks that too,” says a young farmer’s wife.

If you look further around at the carnival in Pesse, you will see, among other things, a boy dressed as a chicken. But characters from films, series and games also pass by, such as Wednesday Addams, currently popular due to the series on Netflix, and the minions, the yellow creatures from the countless computer animation films.

In the evening the children make up Bospoeste place for the elderly. And that will also be a success, says Van Breukelen-Broeksmit. “Because they can drink beer in Drenthe, so it will probably be fine.”
