A lot of animal suffering at ‘shady puppy trade’ in Someren

A lot of animal suffering was discovered on Friday at a dog breeding company in Someren. This happened during a joint inspection by, among others, the police, the municipality of Someren and the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA). According to the municipality, several violations were found during the inspection regarding the care of the more than a hundred dogs in the company.

A spokesman for the National Animal Protection Inspectorate (LID) said that more than 130 dogs were found in the company. The fur of many dogs was not in order, many animals had bad teeth, there was poor ventilation and too little light. There was also uncertainty about vaccinations and passports. A report has been drawn up for the latter. The owner must rectify all deficiencies. If he fails to do so or does so insufficiently, administrative coercion can be exercised at his expense, says the LID.

Migrant workers
In addition, employees of the intervention team found migrant workers in the house, which is contrary to the zoning plan, and there was address fraud. Fire safety was also not up to par. The inspection authorities visited the company after an enforcement request from House of Animals. The animal welfare organization speaks of a shady puppy trade.

A few days ago, House of Animals said it found between 100 and 150 dogs during an undercover operation in a shed. “We are therefore very pleased that the municipality of Someren acted so quickly after our request for intervention,” says Karin Soeters of House of Animals. According to the organization, the company must stop the dog trade by order of the municipality. No one at the municipality could be reached immediately on Friday evening who could provide an explanation.
