Aldi plans to create 6,000 new jobs in the UK this year

Aldi continues to expand in the UK and aims to create 6,000 new jobs there this year. This was announced by the German discounter on Thursday. In addition, new branches are to be opened, including in Norwich and Newcastle. According to Aldi, it currently has around 40,000 employees and more than 990 stores in Great Britain.

The German discounters have been putting British supermarkets under constant pressure for three decades and are conquering more and more market shares. Aldi achieved record results over Christmas. Together, the two German chains now share a good 16 percent (Aldi 9.1 percent; Lidl 7.2 percent) of the market share in British food retail, as the market research institute Kantar announced in January. Especially in the current times of enormously increased consumer prices, many customers turn to the cheaper competitors. (dpa)
